It is for this reason that our “go-to” hotels for Singapore tend towards the established brands, like the Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental and Ritz-Carlton, Millenia, and a few local brands that are done exceptionally well, e.g., the Fullerton Bay and Park Royal on Pickering, our top all-around pick for Singapore (location, value, room size and amenities).

For affordable no-nonsense rooms, try the Carlson City Tanjong Pagar, which is one of the better located hotels in our view (it’s on the edge of the CBD and a short walk to some of the more happening food and drink spots in Singapore (Craig Road, Duxton Hill, Club Street).

Business travelers on the company dime will want to consider either the Ritz Carlton, Millenia or the Mandarin Oriental (rooms at the Ritz are larger and better appointed, but the Mandarin is more intimate and has a Morton’s Steak house!). If you dare stay near Orchard Road—where basically every Singaporean under the age of 22 descends on nights and weekends—we’d recommend staying up a leafy street off of Orchard Road in the cool and classic Four Seasons, one of the more affordable 5-star properties in Singapore.

Everyone raves about the 6-star resort Capella out on Sentosa island, but we were only marginally impressed. It’s not really worth being stuck out on Sentosa, and the hotel charges one of the highest room rates on the island.
